(NC)-Many holidays don't happen by chance: whether you're going to the cottage for a week of relaxation or heading off on a tour of Europe, you will likely spend time planning for your vacation. While you delve into the logistics of your adventure, remember that it is also important to ensure things will be taken care of at home while you're away - plants need watering and, of course, dogs need a place to stay if they aren't coming with you.

Whether your pooch's temporary home is with friends or at a kennel, check with your veterinarian to see if any additional treatments are necessary. For example, your veterinarian may recommend a vaccination to protect against canine cough, one of the most prevalent infectious diseases that dogs can contract. A form of bronchitis, the disease is caused by bacteria and viruses. The result is a dog with a dry, fitful cough, which may sound like a loud honk and may be accompanied by discharge from your dog's mouth or nose. Luckily, all it takes is a quick trip to your veterinarian where your dog can receive an injectable vaccine, Bronchicine, which protects against canine cough.

In fact, many kennels require dogs to have a kennel cough vaccine before they arrive. It takes about a week after the injection to ensure your dog is protected so remember to factor that into your planning. Of course, you can also ask your veterinarian to give the injection as part of your dog's annual check-up and avoid one more last minute errand.

Leaving your pet behind is never easy, but protecting him will stand him in good stead as he meets and greets new dogs during his time - and yours - away from home.
