Teen Help - Strategies For Parents
Author: Robert William LockeInvolving teens in family decisions is a great way to instill independence and at the same time make family life more democratic. Having family meetings like this can be a great way to get teen help. If things are not said, then there is resentment and maybe tension builds up. Drawing up contracts for teen driving and use of car plus a homework contract are great ways for teens to be in on the process and see things from a different angle. You can make sure that rewards for adhering to the curfew can be given, by adding on an extension of half an hour or whatever.
As regards food and supplements, there are dietary changes which can help a little to avoid hyperactivity getting out of hand and keeping kids calmer in general. Diet is often overlooked when seeking teen help. We now know that a lot of teenage violence and delinquency has been linked to additives and highly processed foods. At the University of Goteborg, in Sweden, an experiment with giving kids a daily dose of fish oil supplements revealed the ADHD and hyperactive symptoms were cut by almost 50% after just six months. Apparently the fatty acids in fish oil can help with concentration and the ability to focus as well. I know some parents who see a reduction in the number of tantrums when their kids are on these supplements for a while.
It is when your teen arrives home drunk or just ignores the curfew and swears at you when reprimanded that you need to have other strategies in place. These are specific situations but when you follow a behavior modification course because we are into heavy duty stuff here where consequences and rewards are just not on anymore. That is where you have to be realistic about rules that you know are enforceable and are reasonable. In following a behaviour modification course, you will get all the teen help you will ever need.
You will also discover when and why you should take a back seat in parenting as sometimes a nagging parent can ruin all the progress made. I know some parents who discovered a whole new life when they decided to go for behavior therapy . They were able to deal with difficult situations with their teens and felt that without that sort of teen help, their family life would have collapsed.
