Steps

  1. On the terminal, type: su -
  2. You will be prompted for the root password. Type it in.
  3. You are now logged on as root. Type /sbin/ifconfig *device_name* down. For most people, the device name will be eth0.
  4. Type /sbin/ifconfig *same_device_name* up.
  5. Type exit.
  6. Your network device had now been restarted, and you are logged out of root.
  7. On some distributions, including Debian and Fedora Linux you also can use the command: /etc/init.d/networking restart

Tips

  • Most computers will use eth0 as the main network device name.
  • Some computers that have other types of network interfaces, such as an internal WiFi card, would have different device names. For example: An internal WiFi card would have the name of wlan0, but a PCI adapter would have the name ath0.

Warnings

  • This will temporarily disable the network device (for a few seconds)! If you are running a server of any type, or are using your network connectio, it will stop working for a few seconds. Be warned!
