Website Improvement
This morning I was talking with a customer who wanted us to include music on his website. This made me think about the normal perceptions people have about their cheap website design and how often I have been distracted by items that are totally unrelated to a business and how they affect my experience on those websites and how many times I didn't become the customer of the business because I had problems finding information on their products or services.
Here are some tips to avoid those cheap website design and web development traps in order to get the best out of your website for customers and yourself.
1.Playing Frank Sinatra: I love Frank Sinatra and his music but I would never put any of his music on my website. The simple reason is that while the music is playing in the background, visitors to my website will not be able to concentrate on the information that is present on my website. Visitors turn into customers when they can find information related to service they are looking for. Not because they liked music on a website. However if I was a music or entertainment company this would have been different. A good example of a website using music very well is hitparade.com.au .
2.Playing hide and Seek: I have seen many cheap website designer or websites developed with great visual techniques. Websites that have WOW factor when you look at the graphic design, but it becomes very difficult to find information on those websites. Until or unless you are a graphic design or an art company, there is no need to go wild on high-end graphics at the cost of content and website navigation. It is important to strike a balance between aesthetics and usability.
3. Making it difficult to become your customer: Websites ask their visitors to put in some information so that businesses can call the visitors and follow up the customer. However, I go to websites that have umpteen questions before customers can submit their inquiry. This is a very efficient way to lose your customers. Any form should only ask for basic information you need to be able to contact your customer. This process makes it easy for your customer to contact you and also allows you as a business to give a basic personal touch as you talk to the customer and get more information at that stage.
In short, make browsing your website a pleasant experience by striking a balance between essence and aesthetics. The motive of your cheap web design and web development should be to convert visitors into customers and not driving them away.
If you think through the above points, you will realize that a lot of information is already available to you (especially if you are an established business). Your website in many terms is an extension of your physical business. The above mentioned information should be available to you in terms of corporate knowledge. Talk to your sale people, look at your customer files and your sales pattern, try and source information from your suppliers. For a new business, it could include analyzing your competitors.
